About the cemetery

A small cemetery with a long history

Bogenhausen Cemetery occupies the right bank above the River Isar around St Georg church. Its origins reach back to the 9th century. Covering around 0.2 hectares with approximately 240 burial plots, it is Munich’s smallest cemetery by area.

Church and municipal sections, three burial fields, wall graves and urn niches sit close together. The grounds are easy to survey, but a reliable grave reference is still needed when looking for one particular grave.

Before you visit

  • Check the seasonal opening hours; the cemetery closes at 17:00 or 19:00 depending on the time of year.
  • Save the municipal PDF via the cemetery map page. It shows two entrances, three burial fields and a parking indication.
  • Ostfriedhof administration handles enquiries and funeral matters; there is no permanently staffed office on the grounds.
  • See address and directions for the Mauerkircherstraße stop and mapped points of orientation.

St Georg at the centre

The church stands in the middle rather than at the edge of the grounds. Graves, urn walls and paths cluster closely around it. The cemetery tour links St Georg with the Soldner memorial slab, two urn walls and a water point. Notable graves presents five documented people with real photographs of their graves.

How many entrances does the plan show?

The PDF shows two entrances: one from Bogenhauser Kirchplatz and one from Neuberghauser Straße. Because the plan is schematic, no coordinates are derived from it for the interactive map.
