Find a grave

Grave search

The grounds are small, but searching by name alone remains uncertain without a grave or location reference.

Gather the information you already have

A focused enquiry should include as much as possible:

  • the full name and any alternative spellings,
  • date of birth and death, or at least the approximate burial year,
  • names of close relatives,
  • any grave number, field reference or older directions,
  • photographs or documents that show a location reference.

This portal does not maintain an official burial register. No publicly available online name search for Bogenhausen Cemetery is documented here.

If you have a grave reference

  1. Copy the reference in full without changing its format.
  2. Open the cemetery map and identify the relevant burial field.
  3. Choose one of the two entrances shown in the PDF.
  4. Within the field, follow existing paths and any visible row or grave numbering.
  5. Allow enough time within the opening hours.

The PDF shows three burial fields, but no individual names. A field number narrows the search; it is not a point coordinate.

If you only know a name

Contact the cemetery administration before travelling. Ostfriedhof administers Bogenhausen Cemetery, and there is no permanently staffed office on site. The administration decides whether and to what extent it can provide a location.

For selected public figures, notable graves presents five people with real grave photographs. Only the Soldner memorial slab has a precise mapped position; no location is estimated for the other four entries.

Be considerate on site

Stay on the paths, do not step across other graves and never interrupt a funeral. Photograph other people or private graves only with permission. If a location remains uncertain, ask the administration again rather than cutting through burial rows.
